All The Saints - Fire On Corridor X
3.5/5
Words: Mark Corcoran-Lettice
In the wake of My Bloody Valentine’s glorious return to deafening form this summer, the timing’s surely right for the new wave of shoegazers like Deerhunter and A Place To Bury Strangers to go overground. All The Saints, with their debut album Fire On Corridor X, clearly hope to join the ranks of such fine noise mongers, and while their inspirations really are there for all to see, their best moments suggest at a distinctive voice emerging through the guitar haze. Album highlight Sheffield owes as much to Jupiter-era Cave In as to Chapterhouse, placing an emphasis on propulsive drumming and direct, forceful vocals that gives them a dynamism frequently all-too-lacking amongst shoegazers old and new. Considering the power of tracks like this and Regal Regalia (a number that probably wouldn’t sound too out of place on the new Fucked Up record), their occasional lapses into generic, psuedo-psychedelic textures are all the more disappointing, although they’re thankfully outweighed by the fuzzy, Swervedriver-esque rockers they excel at.
A perfect album it isn’t, but at its best Fire On Corridor X offers a few tantalizing glimpses at what could be a very promising young band.
