Pivot - O Soundtrack My Heart
3.5/5
Words: Adam Groark
Stray away from the dirt trodden commercial path and you may stumble across Pivot. Australian brothers Richard and Laurence Pike along with Dave Miller have just signed a sixteen album deal with WARP Records. Kicking off with O Soundtrack My Heart, their instrumental debut is an eerie voyage into the strange and unknown.
Beginning with the short but by no means understated October, the tone of the album is beautifully set. A rumble of noise resembling a storm trapped in an egg cup beats through the speakers, darkened by the chilling rattle of a snare. Single chords slice through like a ray of sunshine, helped along by a synthesized harmony. Dark and curious, the effect is mesmerizing.
Taking the title quite literally, the video for first single In The Blood is a gore fest shark attack with a twist. Using handmade puppets and filming in a back yard, the sequence is black comedy at its best. As a synthesizer chimes with prying intent, the heavy bass and drums slowly become more erratic.
Parodying a film like Jaws is no coincidence, with each song adopting a grand cinematic feel. Title track O Soundtrack My Heart opens with a synthesizer that sounds more extraterrestrial than experimental. Heavy rock riffs submerged in feedback plunge in and out of haunting electro; it’s as if Metallica are playing their farewell concert somewhere on Mars.
Building up layers of sound with such intensity is the key ingredient throughout the album. Although it’s not one you could play on repeat, it’s a definite winner for originality and scope.
