Motorhead @ Carling Academy, Newcastle (07.11.08)
Words: Owain Heather
Last time I saw Motorhead play it was just over 10 years ago at Brixton Academy when I had pink hair (a full head of hair, at that) and harboured delusions of punk rock credibility. It took a near lynching in Pitchshifter's moshpit at Reading Festival to make me realise this wasn't my scene.
Motorhead's legions of die-hard fans fill the Newcastle Academy to the rafters and even queing for a drink at the bar feels like it's going to reach a Hillsborough style crush so I go to the back of the venue feeling like an old man despite being 20 years below the average age group tonight.
Motorhead may seem repetitive but their old school heavy metal delights a sea of leather jackets and sweaty man-boobs and the loyalty is sealed by the moshpit frenzy (which i dare not go near) but their are numerous seasoned looking hairy types who comment on the ragged Lemmy appears haggard even by his standards and some even believe that the supporting cock-rock buffoons Saxon even upstaged them. Regardless, the beefy riffs and gravel-voiced hollering keeps the old school crew happy.
