Death Cab For Cutie – No Sunlight
Words: Jule Wilson
Despite the bleak title, the melody of this catchy little number offers plenty of sunlight and it's obvious the track has come from a band well seasoned to playing together in a studio.
Its construction allows each instrument to have its day, making it sound as though the guitar, the piano and the drums have each become individual band members - pretty much what you'd expect from indie veterans who've released six albums.
The chorus is where this song lets its hair down a little, but barely, and the song has a familiarity about it, making you feel you must have heard it some time before.
And the best thing for me about No Sunlight is that it doesn't try too hard. It's a decent enough tune with calm etched through it, despite the lyrics and slightly stompy bits. A good listen, which shouldn't be over analysed.
