Mystery Jets - Half in Love with Elizabeth
Words: Craig Wilson
Mystery Jets have based their whole shtick on a period between about 1979 and 1983 - and it's not just the pastel clothing. It's the influences - Mum and Dad's record collections, style tips from Miami Vice, a seventies new-wave sensibility that brings to mind the Korgis, XTC, possibly even New Musik (look up their Living by Numbers on youtube). It's perfectly acceptable guitar pop with skittering synths, cute harmonies and a pained vocal lead that is treated to a bit of Trevor Horn compression. If the rest of the new album is as commercially viable as this then they'll do very well with the H&M Neo-Mod crowd.
