Robert Wyatt and Bertrand Burgalat - This Summer Night
Words: Conor McArdle
An interesting bit of information about Robert Wyatt is that the former drummer in Soft Machine and critically successful solo artists has a verb named after him. ‘Wyatting’ it seems is the practice of choosing deliberately obscure music on a pub jukebox to annoy the patrons. I imagine it’s a good laugh.
Paring Wyatt’s fragile vocals with silky smooth French producer, Bertrand Burgalat, is a strange move. Considering summer was over before it begun, it seems even more bizarre. Regrettably however the single is a sterile, forgettable experience which can hardly be said about Wyatt’s own material. Indeed Wyatt’s vocals seem only to sound comfortable within the skin of his own music. Funky electro beats don’t suit his voice, and the extended instrumental sections seem to pad out the song to unnecessarily lengths. It sounds like the sort of music you’d find on the credits of a daytime holiday program. This collaboration seems forced, and it would certainly annoy anyone unfortunate enough to come across it in their favourite pub.
