The Walkmen – The Blue Route
Words: Rob Sampson
Released through Fierce Panda, The Blue Route is the first single from The Walkmen’s new You and Me album. The single is pretty much standard grown up indie rock, but with a drum beat hidden underneath that seems to have been lifted straight from a pavilion show on Brighton Pier in the 50’s, as pretty girls expose their knobbly knees and pensioners compete for the title of gorgeous granny, capturing the late afternoon sunshine of matinees and ice cream. Considering that they’re from New York, The Walkmen have a very British summertime feel about them. Although the vocals are great, benefiting from too many cigarettes, the song doesn’t really seem to have any sort of destination. We just have a verse and a chorus, verse and a chorus, verse and a chorus, and then it ends. It’s not awful, but as the first single of a new album, it doesn’t exactly leave me with much hope for what else is on the new long player. The Blue Route is a decent enough song, but one which seems not to have a route of its own.
